The Curriculum at Maidenbower Junior School

Curriculum at Maidenbower junior school banner

At Maidenbower Junior School, the curriculum is designed to:

  • be planned and sequenced so that new knowledge and skills build on what has been before
  • ensure that children have the opportunity to develop the necessary knowledge and skills to take advantage of opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life
  • promote our six values of responsibility, respect, growth, curiosity, tolerance and resilience
  • ensure that every child has access to as broad a curriculum as possible
  • develop a mastery and reflective approach to learning
  • promote mental well-being through physical and mental health

Our curriculum is driven by the need to prepare our children for lifelong learning.  At MJS, we offer a rich and vibrant curriculum which is ambitious for all learners.  Through our curriculum, we develop the essential knowledge, skills and understanding which are the building blocks for later life.  Our curriculum encompasses not only the formal requirements of the National Curriculum, but goes beyond the experiences of the classroom to ensure that our children are exposed to the richest and most varied opportunities that we can provide.  The curriculum is enhanced by our commitment to Values-based learning (including British Values) and, through this, we provide experiences which promote confident, self-motivated pupils, eager for lifelong learning.

Our Aims:

  • To ensure high quality teaching that enables the acquisition of skills, knowledge, understanding together with the values which will be of use to future learning and living.
  • To promote, facilitate and enable children with disabilities and special educational needs to be included in a broad and rich curriculum.
  • To provide opportunity and challenge for high attaining children and support for the good progress of low attaining children
  • To promote a wide range of enrichment experiences – residentials, trips and visiting speakers – enabling our children to make connections across all forms of learning and to be reflective when considering the ways in which they learn and the skills they are developing.
  • To develop lively and enquiring minds through encouraging children to question, discuss issues and make informed choices. To promote positive attitudes, good behaviour and moral understanding. To nurture self – esteem so that children are motivated to learn and develop the ability to co-operate and work with others.
  • To ensure our children understand about how to keep themselves safe and that our systems and procedures support this aim.
