The footbridge leading from Parker Close to the school site was inspected on Friday 4 October.
The bridge has deteriorated since a previous inspection in April this year. Of particular concern are the timber guardrails on both sides, which are severely rotten in several places. The guardrails are at risk failure if reasonable force is applied, e.g. a child leaning on them or one child pushing another. The non-slip finish to the bridge deck is in very poor condition and poses a trip/slip hazard to pedestrians. This is exacerbated in wet weather and by fallen leaves and other detritus.
The report goes on to say that the Council strongly recommend that action is taken to mitigate the serious health and safety risks outlined above. Their advice is to close the bridge until repairs have been carried out and so we will be closing the bridge from and including Thursday 17th October.
Please find and allow time for alternative routes to the schools via either Maidenbower Drive or by using the footpaths to the shop area.
We will keep you updated with the timetable of repairs to the bridge once we are in receipt of this.
Many thanks for your understanding.
